Can we stop saying things like “Everything happens for a reason” and “It was just meant to be”? (Or worse: “Guess it wasn’t meant to be.”) OK, good! Because I’d be hardpressed to think of statements more common and yet so completely, utterly inane. Next person who assures you that the reason you didn’t get that exciting new job offer was because “it just wasn’t meant to be,” but that you should feel sanguine about it because “everything happens for a reason” — you need to shuht! them asap and ask how, exactly, that worldview accounts for events like the Rwandan genocide, or the Manson murders, or even the return of “The Apprentice” to NBC’s lineup this January.
